Arrow II Portable Yagi Ham Radio Antenna
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.2 месяца назад
In this video we are demonstrating the Arrow II portable Yagi antenna. I have been using this antenna for HAM / Amateur radio for several months. It never ceases to amaze me, whether it is working satellites like the ISS (space station) and others, practicing simplex at low power, or reaching distant repeaters in difficult terrain.

Baojie BJ-318 Power Problems - Have you tested yours?

In this video we power test two Baojie BJ-318 radios and compare with an AnyTone 779UV radio. On high power, the BJ-318's only transmit at 1.5W on VHF compared with the AnyTone which puts out 20W. This issues seems to be wide spread, because we are observing the problem on multiple radios, even brand new out of the box. I was pretty sure it was a TRAM 1185 in that video but looking it it I am second guessing myself if it was a Bingfu. Either way, the TRAM 1185 is the better out of the two. I did another video comparing the Nagoya NMO-72 and Nagoya TB-320A. The best out of all these (as far as reach is concerned) was the Nagoya TB-320A but it is a larger antenna (I wouldn't want to drive around on the highway or in the bush with it) The Nagoya NMO-72 is a really good antenna though. Similar size to the TRAM 1185 and Bingfu but works better. The mag mount for it is larger and sold separately. The NMO-72 is the one I use now when I'm mobile in the Jeep. Hope this helps!

I also have a portable yagi antenna (the split boom Arrow II antenna) and with that, I can do the same (well over 50km) on low power on the AnyTone and even a hand held set to low power (1W) ... just figured I would mention it in case this would be useful for your emergency group. Nicely done. I was just gifted (although not sure how much I appreciate it at this point) a 240 from a friend who had locked it up. Piston was pretty beat up so I replaced it along with the case. The seal on the bottom didn’t have a gasket to transfer so I tried to simply lay in some liquid gasket. That did NOT work. Any idea on where to source those little narrow gaskets that join the top and bottom of the cylinder? I enjoyed the video. Thanks!

    • @caddisguy
      @caddisguy 6 месяцев назад

      I am not sure about cloth gaskets for the 240. The 240's don't come with cloth gaskets from the OEM like some of the other Husqvarna models. There might be some aftermarket ones. If not, you could probably get the material and trace/cut it yourself. I'd be interested if I ever need to re-do this one, another 240 or similar. The liquid gasket was the most difficult part for me. I tried to just run a good bead on the lines at the bottom of the cylinder housing, but ended up just smearing a thin layer on the entire bottom of it. Then of course putting it back on and screwing it in without letting it rub or touch anything. That was the hard part for me. If it helps at all, I used Loctite 518 for the gasket and it is still holding up great. In my case I consider myself lucky to have got it good on the first try. I can see how it could have taken more than one try (a job I'd prefer to avoid doing twice) One another thing I'll add, I remember looking at the temperature rating on this stuff and thinking I better make sure I have the saw tuned right, that I am not running lean or going over 9000rpm in the cut, because I don't think the gasket (I could be wrong) would hold up if the saw overheated by much. Luckily the carb was "almost" spot on. I think I just needed to open up the low and high jet a little bit (like 1/8 turn) to mark it perfect (it was bogging in the cut initially) Still running great though!

    • @caddisguy
      @caddisguy 10 месяцев назад

      Backcountry access is getting difficult on the mainland, particularly Region 2. Our old stomping grounds for bear and blacktails was gated in 2021. A generous buddy suggested an area for us in 2022. It was loaded with very large black bears. However it was gated (illegally according to the NRO which is still looking into it) a few months later. We scouted a couple more places in 2022 that were promising for bear and blacktail. They were both gated this Spring, so we headed out to Region 3 and found some good idea. It's nice to explore more and more, but can get a little exhausting and discouraging. As you probably agree, scouting and finding those great little tucked away and productive areas is one of the most time consuming aspects of hunting. Getting one or two gems shut down, no big deal, but when they get shut down as fast as you can find them, it's hard to keep up, but one thing for sure is we're never going to quit, because we're stubborn and we love it!! :)

      It sure is a great little radio. I hope you'll like it just as much as we do. I liked it enough I bought a second one so I can keep one in the house and the other in the Jeep. Glad you enjoyed the video. We filmed another video a few weeks back comparing the Nagoya TB-320A and NMO-72 antennas with this AnyTone UV779. I will post that up sometime in the next few weeks if you're interested.

      I think by the time I got around to testing those radios it was outside of the return window. I'm not sure about the 218's but from what I gather than 318's are hit and miss. Some of them are functional for the most part power wise, but are still glitchy. There are better radios for the price... AnyTone and TYT are good in my experience.

      I think here in Canada they freeze our bank accounts now if we transmit more than 2W on GMRS 😂 How long have you had your AnyTone 779? I am curious how they hold up over time. I went to order another one from Amazon but they are sold out. Not too sure about ordering from AliExpress.

    I have one that works perfect. Must've got a bad batch. I hate any kind of beeps. As mentioned, I turned the beep off in the menu. I keep it in my tornado shelter with a retractable antenna. Sorry you got a bad one. I had the same problem with UV 5R. Four of five failed in a few months. I replaced them with this. Month after month it just works.

    • @caddisguy
      @caddisguy Год назад

      That is good news that yours work as they should. I thought my 318's were alright as I could still hit repeaters and simplex worked for a few miles, but noticed I had better range and signal reports on 5W HT's. Mine could be from a bad batch like you said. What do your 318's measure on the power meter on VHF at high? I just orderer the AnyTone AT-779UV from Amazon. Really impressed so far. 21-23W on high, good signal reports, faster scanning and I like that you can set it to exclude channels from Scan right from the menu. Thanks for the comment and 73 to you!

    I would contact the manufacturer and get both your radios replaced I have 3 of these radios and all are up to par! The thing I hate about these radios is the dam beep is loud and needs to be either silent or they should give us a way to lower the the beeps. Anyway thought I would leave a comment saying what the 3 radios that I have say and do exactly as it's advertised...

    • @caddisguy
      @caddisguy Год назад

      Appreciate the comment David. Can you confirm you have tested VHF on a power meter? The beep can be turned off through the menu or CHIRP, but it is an "all or nothing" thing. It would be nice if it was volume controlled. Funny enough the beep that can be heard in this video is not the radio, but rather my CO detector/alarm warning of low battery. 73's!
